This is a step by step photo tutorial on how to sew Amélie Cowl Neck Top using our #AmélieTop sewing pattern.
We offer three ways of instructions for each of our sewing patterns. First is drawing instruction which you’ll find in your booklet once you purchase the pattern, two is a photo step by step tutorial which you can see below and three as a sew-along YouTube video. By doing this we want to offer variations of options depending on your preferences, but also help beginners.
This sewing pattern is available in UK 6-16 / EU 34-44 / US 2-12/ AU 6-16 and can be printed in A4, Letter and A0 size.
Start from preparing the straps, fold the fabric strip in half. Sew a stitch 1cm from the folded edge of the strip. (Remember to backstitch at the beginning and the end of the seam). Cut off the excess fabric at the side of the seam reducing the seam allowance to about 4-5mm. Feed your loop turner through your tube until all of the fabric is scrunched up on the turner and the end of it (the hook) pops out the other end of your strap.
Next open up the little hinge on the hook, feed the end of your fabric tube through the hook and pop the hinge closed. Now start pulling onto the bulk of scrunched up fabric at the end of the turner, while pulling the turner in the opposite direction until your strap is completely turned onto its right side. Repeat those steps to make a second strap.
Moving to bodice prepare two back panel pieces. Pin those two pieces together at the CB (centre back). Sew 1cm away from the side seam and then overlock the seam allowance.
Now we can join the front and back panel together. First place the front panel on top and pin sides together. Sew 1cm away from the side seama and then overlock the edge. Repeat the same step on the order side.
Moving on to the facing. Pin back facing at the CB (centre back). Sew 1cm away from the side seam and then overlock the edge. Place the front facing panel on top and pin the sides together. Sew 1cm away from the side seam then overlock the edge.
Repeat the same step on the other side and overlock the bottom edge of the facing.
Now we can move to attaching facing to the bodice. Insert the facing and pin it together.
Now we will insert the cami straps before you’ll sew the facing to the bodice. Insert the cami strap into position and use a pin to secure the strap in place. Turn top on the right side to make sure the straps are attached correctly.
Insert the crossed straps to the front and pin them to secure. Before sewing everything together make sure straps are not twisted and in the right position. Then sew 1cm away from the edge stitch joining all the pieces together.
Now we can finish off the neckline by topstitching closely along to the seam on the facing side making sure the seam allowance is also on the same side.
Moving on to the hem overlock the raw edge, fold 2.5cm and topstitch the hem neatly.
As the last step you can make secure stitches, joining facing with a seam allowance. You can do it by hand or with a machine up to your preferences.
