Meet Giulia: a handmade bikini top
Giulia is a new make of a swimsuit bikini top, sewn with comfort, support, and a feminine silhouette in mind. For this version, I used a four-way stretch swim fabric purchased on Etsy, chosen specifically for its structure and performance.
When sewing swimwear, fabric choice is especially important. Lycra or spandex with a higher GSM works best, as it provides better coverage, support, and durability. Thicker swim fabric is also less likely to be see-through and offers improved protection against UV light.
Design details
The Giulia Bikini Top features a front twist that enhances the bust while providing gentle support. The twist creates soft gathers across the front, which complement both the fabric and the overall design of the swimsuit.
Spaghetti straps finished with a bow tie allow the straps to be easily adjusted, making it simple to customise the fit and level of support. These delicate ties also add a soft, romantic detail that balances the clean lines of the bikini.
At the back, the bikini top is finished with a tie-back closure. This simple and minimal approach keeps the design light and flexible, while allowing the fit to be adjusted comfortably to your body.
Sewing and fit
Giulia is designed to feel supportive without being restrictive. The combination of the twisted front, adjustable straps, and tie-back makes it easy to adapt the fit to your preferences.
This pattern works particularly well with quality swim fabrics that have good recovery and enough weight to hold their shape when worn.
