Size Guide
Printing & Assembling
Printing Options Available:
You have 3 printing options available: A4 size, Letter Size & A0 size. You can print our patterns at home if you have a printer or send them to the online/ local printing shop.
- Ensure you print at actual size (100% scale).
- Verify that the print out size is correct by measuring the scale on any pattern
- Align all pages and tape them together using clear tape and cut out your size. The pattern already includes a 1cm seam allowance
Tip:
You can simply organize your patterns by printing the first page of the booklet and sticking it to A4 envelope. Fold the pattern pieces nicely and store them in the envelopes.
A4, Letter Size, A0 what's that?
Explained: The Difference Between A4, Letter Size, and A0
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sewist, you’ve likely asked yourself: What’s with all the different paper sizes when buying sewing patterns? The answer is simpler than it seems, and it’s actually very important. The main difference? Paper size! Let’s dive into the details so you can choose the right one for your project.
1. What is A4 Size?
A4 is part of the A series of paper sizes and is commonly used worldwide (except in North America). It's one of the most popular paper sizes for everyday printing, and it works just as well for sewing patterns.
Dimensions: A4 paper measures 210 mm x 297 mm (8.27 inches x 11.69 inches).
Sewing Pattern Use: A4 is ideal for printing sewing patterns at home. Larger patterns are divided across multiple pages, allowing you to print them on a standard home printer and assemble them afterwards.
Pros of A4 for Sewing Patterns:
Convenient for home printers.
Instant download: unlike paper patterns, which you have to wait to receive, digital patterns are available instantly, letting you start your project within minutes!
Compact and easy to store. (Pro tip: use A4-sized mailing envelopes to store your patterns!)
Easy to print at home.
For larger patterns, you’ll need to piece together multiple pages, but don’t worry—it’s easier than it looks! Check out my video on how to print and assemble A4 patterns.
2. What is Letter Size?
Letter size is the standard paper size used primarily in the United States and Canada. While it’s very similar to A4, there are slight differences in the dimensions.
Dimensions: Letter size measures 8.5 inches x 11 inches (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm).
Sewing Pattern Use: Like A4, Letter size is often used for downloadable sewing patterns, particularly for home printers in the U.S. and Canada. Because it is slightly different from A4, make sure you use the correct file to avoid any scaling or alignment issues.
Pros of Letter Size for Sewing Patterns:
Easy to find and use in North America.
Widely supported by home printers.
Easy to print and assemble at home.
Important: Always make sure you print the correct file! All my patterns are clearly labelled in the file name (for example, pattern-name-A4-Size.pdf, pattern-name-Letter-Size.pdf, and pattern-name-A0-Size.pdf) and on the first page to avoid confusion.
3. What is A0 Size?
A0 is one of the largest paper sizes in the A series and is often used for large technical drawings, such as architectural plans. In sewing, A0 is perfect for printing full-scale patterns on large sheets, meaning you don’t have to tape lots of smaller pages together.
Dimensions: A0 measures 841 mm x 1189 mm (33.1 inches x 46.8 inches).
Sewing Pattern Use: A0 sewing patterns are printed at full scale on one or more large sheets. Instead of printing across lots of A4 or Letter-sized pages, you receive the pattern on large sheets, saving you the time and hassle of piecing everything together.
Pros of A0 for Sewing Patterns:
Full-scale pattern pieces with little or no assembly required.
Ideal for larger garments or more intricate designs.
Saves time compared with printing and assembling lots of smaller pages.
A0 printing requires specialised equipment that most home printers can’t handle, but there are plenty of online and local printing services that can print A0 sewing patterns for you. Simply upload your file, place your order, and wait for it to arrive. The cost per page is usually quite reasonable, especially when you factor in the time saved by not having to print and tape everything together yourself.
A tip: If you find a print shop that charges more than expected per page, shop around! Higher prices don’t always mean better quality or service—I’ve had great experiences with affordable print shops.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Sewing Pattern Printing
When deciding between A4, Letter size, and A0, keep these factors in mind:
1. Where You Live:
A4 is the standard choice in most countries.
Letter size is commonly used in the U.S. and Canada.
A0 can usually be printed professionally wherever you live.
2. Printer Availability:
A4 and Letter sizes are perfect for home printers, making them the easiest and most accessible options for most sewists.
A0 requires a large-format printer, often available at professional print shops or online printing services.
3. Pattern Assembly:
A4 and Letter-size patterns usually require you to print multiple sheets and tape them together. It can be a little time-consuming, but once you know how, it’s very straightforward.
A0 removes most of the assembly step, giving you full-scale pattern pieces on large sheets and saving you time.
Final Thoughts
The paper size you choose for printing your sewing pattern is important because it ensures your pattern is printed at the correct scale. Even small differences can affect how your finished garment turns out. The best option really depends on where you live, what printer you have access to, and how you prefer to work.
